Teen mental health challenges don’t always look like what we expect. While some teens express sadness or anxiety openly, many show signs through behavior changes or withdrawal. Being able to recognize early signs can be the key to helping a young person before a crisis hits.

Here are five common signs to look for:

  1. Changes in sleep or appetite – Sleeping too much or too little, loss of appetite or overeating.
  2. Withdrawal from friends or family – Avoiding social interaction or isolating themselves more than usual.
  3. Loss of interest in activities they used to enjoy – Pulling away from sports, clubs, or hobbies they once loved.
  4. Difficulty concentrating – Grades dropping, zoning out during conversations, or unfinished work.
  5. Irritability or sudden mood swings – Seeming angry, restless, or overwhelmed without clear reason.

How to support them:

  • Don’t push — invite them to talk when they’re ready.
  • Listen more than you speak.
  • Let them know it’s okay to ask for help — and that you’re there to walk with them.
  • Connect them with resources, mentors, or organizations like ours.

Support starts with noticing. Your care and presence can make all the difference.
